Badlands is indeed a safety net, of sorts. The way it works is by connecting all the dots, that connect the 'things that go bump in the night.' The things we are conditioned since childhood to fear.
But fear loses its power, when confronted with understanding. Once we know about that little man behind the curtain, about who has been pulling the strings of all the puppets and making the 'bump in the night' sound effects -- once we understand, none of those things hold power over us.
I am not a big FDR fan but his comment 'all we have to fear is fear itself' is right on the money. [They] are merchants of FUD -- fear, uncertainty, doubt. Fear of an unknown virus that [they]say could kill tens of millions if not more. Uncertainty about thousands of nuclear weapons that could bring an end to humanity as we know it. Doubt as to our place in the world, and whether we matter.
Once we understand how this System of Systems works, it no longer has power over us. It is inconvenient, sure, and unfair; but in time, working together, we can defeat it. Simply by acknowledging that the only real power it has over us is the power we give it -- by being afraid of it. Fear it no more, and it's no more than that little man behind the curtain.
I would say fear has never been my problem…but reacting from anger or outrage, letting those emotions get the better of me - that can throw me off balance and the safety net for me has been the Badlands theme of “the narrative war” and their consistent positive common sense grounding has helped me this past year or more.
